Getting the height, size, and placement just right.

Pendant lights over nightstands have become one of my favorite bedroom design moves. They’re elegant, practical, and instantly make a bedroom feel custom and intentional. Plus, they free up space on the nightstand, which is always a win.
But if you’ve ever planned them, you know there are quite a few decisions involved. How high should they hang? Where exactly should they sit relative to the bed? How big should they be?
Here are the key things I think about when installing pendant lights above bedside tables.
1. The Ideal Height: Where Pendant Lights Should Hang
Height is the first (and arguably most important) decision.
Most lighting designers recommend hanging bedside pendants 18–24 inches above the nightstand surface. This creates comfortable task lighting for reading without the fixture hanging so low that it becomes intrusive.
Another way to think about it is relative to the bed:
About 28–32 inches above the mattress surface works well for reading light and visual balance.
In many bedrooms this places the bottom of the pendant around 5–5½ feet from the floor.
Why this range works:
The light falls naturally onto your book or nightstand.
It sits slightly above shoulder level when you're sitting up in bed.
It avoids glare in your eyes.
A good trick to use: sit on the bed and check where your eye level falls. The pendant should sit slightly above that line.
2. Should the Pendant Be Centered Over the Nightstand?
The classic approach is to center the pendant over the nightstand, aligning it with the middle of the table, but you can also install it slightly closer to the bed.
Centered over the nightstand is best when:
The bed layout is symmetrical
The pendant is acting as a bedside lamp replacement
Slightly closer to the bed
Some designers shift the pendant 2–4 inches toward the bed so the light lands more directly on a book or pillow area. This is subtle but can improve functionality.
3. Pendant Size: Getting the Scale Right
A useful rule is that the pendant should be about ½ to ⅔ the width of the nightstand.
For example:
Nightstand Width | Pendant Diameter |
18–20 inch | 8–10 inch pendant |
22–26 inch | 10–14 inch pendant |
28–32 inch | 14–18 inch pendant |
Scale does. matter:
Too small → looks like an afterthought
Too large → overwhelms the bedside area
In many bedrooms, 10–14 inches diameter tends to be the sweet spot.
That being said, rules in design are meant to be broken when they don't work for you or your specific project. If you have a pendant that you love and it doesn't fit the above measurements, don't sweat it. Use it, love it, it will be perfect for you.
4. Distance From the Wall
This depends on the depth of your nightstand and the type of pendant.
A good guideline is:
Hang the pendant roughly centered on the nightstand depth (front to back).
That usually means 8–12 inches away from the wall.
If your pendants hang too close to the wall:
They won’t light the surface well.
They can feel visually cramped.
If they hang too far forward:
They may interfere with standing up from the bed.
5. Consider Mattress Height
Often forgotten. A low platform bed vs. a tall upholstered bed can change the pendant placement by several inches.
As a rule:
The pendant should land slightly above seated shoulder height.
Tall mattresses or thick pillow stacks may require raising the fixture.
Always check height after the mattress is installed, not just the bed frame.
6. Shade Material Matters as it affects how the light behaves.

Glass pendants are best for:
Airy spaces
Modern or transitional bedrooms
Maximizing brightness
Their downside is that visible bulbs can create glare.

Metal shades are best for:
Directional reading light
Industrial or modern rooms

Fabric or paper shades are best for:
Soft, warm bedroom lighting
Traditional or cozy interiors

Natural materials (rattan, woven) are best for:
Organic or relaxed spaces
Creating texture and shadow patterns.
7. Don’t Forget Light Temperature
Bulb selection. is important. Bedrooms generally feel best with:
Warm white bulbs (2700K), but lots of times fixtures come with 3000K built in
Dimmer switches for flexibility
Layered lighting also improves the overall atmosphere by combining pendants with sconces, lamps, or recessed lights.
8. Wiring and Switch Placement
Ideally:
Each pendant has its own switch or independent dimmer.
Switches are reachable from the bed.
Hardwiring should be planned before drywall or headboard installation.
You can also integrate smart bulbs.
9. Ceiling Height can change the Formula
If the ceiling is taller than 9 feet, pendants can hang slightly higher to maintain proportion.
You could raise pendants about 3 inches for each extra foot of ceiling height so that they don't feel too low relative to the room. But always do a sanity check with below pre-installation tip.
10. Pre-installation Tip
Before installing anything permanently, tape a paper circle or rectangle the size of the pendant to the wall or ceiling and hang a string at the planned height.
Stand back and check:
sight lines from the bed
scale relative to the headboard
clearance when sitting up.
Lighting always looks different once installed.

Pendant lights over nightstands are one of those design details that can completely transform a bedroom. Done right, they feel tailored, elevated, and thoughtfully designed.
The secret is balancing function and proportion: the right height, the right scale, and the right light quality.
When everything lines up, a bedroom will feel both beautiful and comfortable.
